Obituary for John Peak

John Peak, 95, of Grinnell died on February 5, 2018, at St. Francis Manor.

A Celebration of Life service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell.

Family visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

A private family burial will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

John was born on February 26, 1922, on a farm west of Grinnell, the son of James and Elizabeth Bennett Peak. He attended rural schools near his home and junior high school in Gilman. He was a 1940 graduate of Newburg High School. Following his education, he began his career in farming.

On July 20, 1941, he was united in marriage with Dorothy Ellen Thompson in Grinnell. A union of nearly 77 years!

The couple farmed together in Chester Township, north of Grinnell, while raising their family. After 50 years on the farm they retired and moved to Grinnell in 1991. During this time, John also sold Super Sweet Feed for 22 years. While in retirement, he enjoyed continued help on the farm, especially during harvest time, mowing duties at Grinnell Ahrens Park, and being a driver for Grinnell College.

He was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell, served on the boards of the Federal Land Bank and Poweshiek County Cattleman’s Association, and for a few years, a member of the Farm Bureau.

When time allowed, he and Dorothy enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, including Hawaii, and Europe. Touring Ireland, where his parents immigrated from and through Ellis Island in 1909, was particularly special for him. He enjoyed dancing with Dorothy and attending dances in the area. Making memories was his favorite pastime! But, most importantly was his love and devotion for his family. He loved them dearly!

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Grinnell; four children, Dale (Paula) Peak, Ray (Marlene) Peak, Marie (Robert) Hotchkin-Kellogg, and Cristy (Lee) Osborn, all of Grinnell; six grandchildren, Randall, Angela, Shana, Curtis, Heather and Ryan; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gerald "Tom" Hotchkin; three brothers, James, Edward and Bill Peak; and three sisters, Mary Jane Durr, Margaret Harris and Rebina Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Grinnell Regional Hospice, St. Francis Manor – Hammond Center, or the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs.
