Obituary

Norva Marie 'Corky' Broyles, 69, of Grinnell died November 14, 2010, at Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell. A gathering of friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 4, at the Grinnell Estates community room, 2020 West Street. Corky was born June 18, 1941, in Christopher, Illinois and was raised and educated in Oklahoma. She lived in several communities throughout her life, including Iowa City for several years, before moving to Grinnell in 1996. She was a migrant worker and later a motel manager. She retired in 1991. She was a proud member of the Presbyterian Church in Grinnell and enjoyed her many friends there and their support. After being disabled, she rediscovered the artist within her, sketching kittens, and other pets. She painted fun posters and gourds birdhouses. She fought a long battle with esophageal cancer requiring her voice box to be removed. Her fun loving spirit was not daunted and she continued to laugh and have fun until she was also diagnosed with lung cancer. She made her decision not to pursue further active treatment of her disease in early spring. She was in Hospice care at Friendship Manor where her fun loving continued and she enjoyed visits from her friends. Survivors include one daughter, Terri Lynn Broyles of Oklahoma, and two sons, Guy Michael and Roger Troy Vroyles. Joan Anderson of Grinnell was her dearest friend of more than 40 years. Corky's extended family included Joan's children, Marlys Anderson, Scott Anderson and Tim Anderson. Tom Moore was a special friend to Corky in the last months of her life. He was a great comfort and support to her and her extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents and two children, Rita Maureen and Mickey Joe Broyles.
