Obituary

Nadine L. Courtney, 84, of Grinnell died October 14, 2008, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services have been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 17, at the First Assembly of God Church in Grinnell with Pastor Stephen Roobol officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert and Mark Bennett, Billie Jo and Wanda Adams, and Chris and Mark Anthony. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Assembly of God Church or Epilepsy Foundation of America. Nadine was born on February 17, 1924, in Grinnell, to George W. and Laura W. Rasp Rutherford. She was raised in the Newburg area and attended school there. She later received her G.E.D. from Grinnell High School. She was married to Ernest R. Courtney and their marriage later ended in divorce. Nadine lived all her life in Grinnell and was employed with the Grinnell Glove Factory, Grinnell College, Friendship Manor, and later at St. Francis Manor. She retired in 1989. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. Nadine was very devoted to her family and held a strong faith in God. She enjoyed raising her cats and reading. Her home was always a welcoming place and was noted for a gathering place for the neighborhood kids. Survivors include five children, Gene Rutherford of Cedar Rapids, Barbara Courtney of Marion, Harold Courtney of Millington, Tennessee, Teresa Courtney of Grinnell, and Gertie Ann Mark of Sacramento; nine grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son in infancy; five brothers, Verle, Charlie, Delbert, Harry, and Lester Rutherford; three sisters, Tilla Watkins, Stella Burchard, and Bernice Cox; and a great-grandson, Smoke Daniel Griffith.
