Mildred D. King, 99, of Grinnell, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell with Rev. Dr. Dondrea Walker, pastor of the church, officiating. Music will be provided by J'Remi Barnes, pianist and Milton Severe, vocalist. Casket Bearers will be Kenneth King, James King, Keith King, Kenneth John King, Scott Burkett and Hillard Turner Jr. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Mildred was born on February 28, 1918, near Deep River, Iowa to James Elmer and Harriett Anna Armstrong Gauley. She was raised in the Deep River area and graduated from Deep River High School with the Class of 1936. On November 20, 1947, she was united in marriage to Raymond "Bud" King in Deep River. The couple farmed near Grinnell until 1966, when they moved into town. Mildred raised her children and maintained the family home, but also found time to work in the food service of Grinnell College and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Mildred was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, the Isabelle Brande Guild and the women's society of the church. She enjoyed raising flowers in her garden, oil painting, reading, cooking and baking. She will be remembered as a good mother, a competitor and a good friend to many. Survivors include her children, Kenneth King of Grinnell, James King of Woodland, Washington, Keith King of Oregon City, Oregon and Connie Newman of Flower Mound, Texas; her grandchildren, Kenneth J. King, Natasha L. Morrow, Kelly J. King, Benjamin J. King, Mathew A. King, Timothy L. Newman and Jeremy P. Newman; her great grandchildren, Scott Burkett, Taylor Coulson, Katie Morrow, Jessica Morrow, Avery Newman, Paige Newman, Emily Newman and Juliet Newman; and her sister, Eunice Martin of Indianapolis, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Clara McMeekin and Margaret Reid; and three brothers, Elmer, Robert and Melvin Gauley.
