Mabel M. Lewis, 94, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. David Pinkerton officiating. Casket Bearers will be Chester Figland, Michael Figland, Nicholas Figland, John Gomez, Paul Hasbrouck and Traer Johnson. Interment will be at the Searsboro Cemetery. The family will be present at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Mabel was born on August 10, 1917, near Searsboro, Iowa to Tom and Ethel Hasley McGinn. She was raised on the family farm, attended rural schools and graduated from Searsboro High School in 1936. On August 5, 1936, she was married to Ward James in New Sharon, Iowa. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm near Searsboro. Later, the couple moved into Searsboro, where they owned and operated the James Grocery Store and the Searsboro Tavern. She was a homemaker and also worked as a cook at the Searsboro School. The couple divorce and she was united in marriage to Glen Lewis in Searsboro. Mabel enjoyed crocheting, sewing, traveling, fishing, wallpapering and watching basketball and baseball games on television. She will be remembered for helping other people in times of distress. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Mae (Lowell) Goemaat of Lynnville and Karen (David) Johnson of Grand River, IA; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; one daughter, Dora M. James; three grandchildren; and one great grandson.
