Catherine A. Wendel, 64, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 29, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rick Magstadt, pastor of the Grace Community Church, officiating. Interment will be at the Westfield Cemetery south of Grinnell. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to the Grace Community Church and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Catherine was born on August 26, 1952, in Carroll, Iowa to Walter and Patricia Parmenter Determan. She was raised in Des Moines and graduated from Des Moines Tech High School. After high school she graduated from the University of Kansas. On March 2, 1972, she was united in marriage to Charles Wendel in Olathe, Kansas and to this union was born one son, Shawn. The couple lived in the Kansas City area and she worked as a lab technician for the University of Kansas Medical Center. In 2002, the family moved to Grinnell and she worked as a lab technician for Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Catherine was a member of the Grace Community Church in Grinnell and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, fishing, traveling, genealogy and supporting the Kansas Jay Hawks. Survivors include her husband, Charles Wendel of Grinnell; her son, Shawn Wendel of Cedar Falls, IA; and siblings, Theresa (Steve) Davis of Altoona, IA, Susan (Roy) Jacobs of Ankeny, IA and Charles (Nancy) Determan of Des Moines, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents.
