Betty L. Strawser, 88, of Elk River, MN and formerly of Grinnell, IA, died on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the Princeton-Elim Nursing Home in Princeton, MN. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Thomas Franklin officiating. Music will be provided by Krista Strawser, pianist and Lois Strawser, vocalist. Casket Bearers will be Matthew Strawser, Todd Kirkpatrick, Dennis Strawser, Ron Strawser, Larry Milburn and Todd Milburn. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and the family will be present at the funeral home beginning at 9:30 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the Betty Strawser Memorial Fund and sent in care of Craig Strawser, 17265 Yale Street NW, Elk River, MN 55330. Betty was born on September 2, 1926, in Grinnell, Iowa to William and Grace Davis Johnson. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. Later, she attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. On December 7, 1945, she was married to Cleo L. Strawser in Grinnell and to this marriage was born two sons, Craig and Michael. The family resided in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin and returned to Grinnell after their retirement. While living in Grinnell, she worked as a secretary for the former Iowa Telephone and Telegraph Company and as a sales clerk for Preston's Clothing and Spurgeons. Betty was a loving wife and mother and she enjoyed church and scout activities. Survivors include her one son, Craig (Krista) Strawser of Elk River, MN; one daughter-in-law, Rose Strawser of Tulsa, OK; four grandchildren, Nicole (Todd) Kirkpatrick, Matt (Rachel) Strawser, Ira (Amy) Strawser and Siera (Mike) Schwarz; seven great grandchildren, Addison, Ava and Tate Kirkpatrick, William, Marissa, Evan and Mason Strawser; and two sisters, Thelma Hadley of Woodland, TX and Maxine Strawser of Coon Rapids, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Michael; her parents; two brothers, Virgil and Clifford Johnson; and three sisters, Irma Laymiller, Bernice Milburn and Naomia Schafer.
