Obituary

Betty L. Dale, 97, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Grinnell Health Care Center. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Keith Morrison, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Honorary Bearers will be Dave Abarr, Ted Bryant, Charlie Criswell, Bill Dean, Garrett Dean, Kevin Hobbs, Todd Hobbs, Al Latcham, Dave Parson and Lyle Parson. Inurnment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Should friends desire memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to Grinnell Health Care Center. Betty was born on October 15, 1915, in Grinnell, Iowa to Clarence and Arminda Keenan Garrett. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. Following her education she worked at Morrison and Shults Glove Company and the Grinnell Shoe Factory. On September 1, 1941, she was married to Shirley O. Dale in Nevada, Iowa. The couple made their home in Grinnell. She worked as an administrative assistant at Grinnell General Hospital and later the family owned and operated Dale's Locker in Grinnell. Prior to her retirement she was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. She was able to remain independent and live in her own home all of her life. Betty enjoyed baking pies and candy and sharing the baked goods with family and friends. She also enjoyed attending local auctions and acquiring antique furniture and dolls. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she enjoyed hosting family holiday dinners. She was a member of the Chester Royal Grange and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her children, Diana Parson of Indianola, Patty Fennelly and Carol Wine, both of Davenport and John Dale of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and seven sisters, Martha, Maude, Bernice, Bonnie, Toni, Mary "Mac" Frances and Roberta.
