Audrey J. Johnson, 86, of Marshalltown and formerly of Gilman, died on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Pianist will be Connie Bryngelson. Casket Bearers will be Nathan Kelsey, Ty Kelsey, Natasha Waters, Colton Paul, Jennifer Brown, Brandie Flathers and Kevin Johnson. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery near Gilman. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gilman American Legion Hall following the service at the cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 12:00 p.m. on Friday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Gilman United Methodist Church or to the Gilman American Legion and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Audrey was born on January 12, 1929, in Evanston, Illinois to Chester and Alice Steen Van Cleave. The family moved to New Sharon, Iowa in 1930 and she attended New Sharon schools. On September 28, 1946, she was married to Duane Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in New Sharon and later moved to Gilman in 1971. Audrey was a homemaker and mother of five children. She enjoyed attending sporting events of her children and grandchildren and cooking for her family. Audrey was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gilman and served as church secretary for many years. She was an active member of the Gilman American Legion Auxiliary and served in various offices. While living in New Sharon she enjoyed being a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and looked forward to attending the Iowa State Fair. Survivors include her children, Vicki (Don) Kelsey of Baxter, Iowa, Randi (Barb) Johnson and Rod Johnson, all of Gilman and Sheila (Wes) Paul of Laurel, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ricki Johnson; one brother, Jack Van Cleave; and three sisters, Geraldine Harris, Doris Schueler and Helen Ver Steegh.
