Bill Johnson, 84, of Gilman, died on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Casket Bearers will be his grandchildren: Jody Lynn Eldridge, Angela Marie Johnson, Melinda Sue Bennett, Justin Tyler Johnson, Cody Blaine Johnson and Quinten Andrew Johnson. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning 12 noon on Sunday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Gilman First Responders or to Grinnell Regional Hospice, and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
Bill was born on April 29, 1932 in Grinnell, Iowa, to Guy and Edna Franks Johnson. He was raised on the family farm near Gilman, and graduated with the Class of 1950 from Gilman High School. Following high school, he attended Iowa State University in Ames.
On November 18, 1951, he was united in marriage to Janet Gunderson in Dunbar, Iowa. Bill and Janet raised two sons, and operated a grain and livestock farm east of Gilman. Bill loved all aspects of farming and he remained on the farm all but a few weeks of his life.
Bill was a member of the Gilman Community-United Church of Christ and he was a former member of the Gilman Co-op Board of Directors. Bill and Janet enjoyed wintering in Arizona and he enjoyed playing various card games.
Survivors include his two sons, Dennis (Lynn) Johnson and Ronald Johnson, all of Gilman; six grandchildren, Jody (Scott) Eldridge, Angela Johnson, Mel (Jake) Bennett, Tyler Johnson, Cody Johnson and Quinten Johnson; two great grandchildren, Maddux and Elliette Bennett; and one sister, Barbara DeWitt of Paso Robles, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one great grandson, Ryan Eldridge; and one brother-in-law, Don DeWitt.
