Paul A. Jurgensen, 79, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Grinnell, died on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. A scripture service will be held 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 22, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Mr. William Olson, deacon of St. Mary's Catholic Church, officiating. A graveside service with military honors will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Adel. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Monday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Paul was born on September 25, 1933, in Belle Plaine, Iowa to Paul and Irene Collins Mattox. He was raised in Tama and attended public school there. During the Korean Conflict he served with the United States Army. He was later adopted by Robert Jurgensen. On August 15, 1953, he was married to Shirley Gibson in Tama. The couple lived in Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma before moving to Grinnell in 1969. He worked as a truck driver and spent 25 years with the Farmhand Company in Grinnell. Paul enjoyed fishing, bowling, billiards, hunting mushrooms and supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes. When he was younger he played softball and was a boxer. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Jurgensen of Oskaloosa; two sons, Randy P. Jurgensen of Tama and James A. Jurgensen of Sully; three daughters, Connie J. Jurgensen and Bethanne S. Jurgensen, both of Oskaloosa and Jackie (Bill) Pollock of Newton; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father; one daughter, Becky Jurgensen; one grandson; one granddaughter; one great granddaughter; one great grandson; and his sister, Barbara.
