Paul E. Heinle, 94, of Marshalltown and formerly of Grinnell, died on Sunday, April 5, 2015, at Villa Del Sol in Marshalltown.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Casket Bearers will be Dave Dale, George Dale, John Dale, Andy Heinle, Steven Heinle and Tim Niedermann. The Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit will handle the flag presentation. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Paul was born on January 15, 1921, in Malcom, Iowa to George and Aleatha Grimm Heinle. He grew up in Grinnell and eventually graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1939. After high school, he attended Iowa State University for a brief time and worked for the DeKalb Seed Corn Company. In 1942, he entered the United States Army Air Corp and served until his discharge in 1945. Following the war, he returned to Grinnell and worked for Ben's Tire Shop. He purchased the business from Ben Tarleton and operated it as H & M Tire Shop. In 1963, he started a 20-year career with the City of Grinnell in the Water Pollution Control Department. He retired in 1983 and continued to make his home in Grinnell. During his retirement he volunteered over 800 hours at various VA Hospitals in Iowa.
Paul was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Eagles Club and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fishing in Minnesota, hunting and gardening. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed competing with the Eagles traveling bowling team, finishing as high as second place in the Eagles National Tournament.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Eugene Heinle of Laurel, Ray (Louann) Heinle of Laurel, Faye (Richard) Niedermann of Gilman, Betsy (Carl) Scott of Liscomb, Dave (Patty) Dale of Grinnell, John Dale of Grinnell, George (Julie) Dale of Texas, Andy (Joan) Heinle of Eddyville, Todd (Patti) Heinle of Ohio and Ginger (Phil) Akason of Waukee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Dale and Myrna Heinle; four brothers, Kenneth, Fred, Keith and Harold Heinle; as well as an infant sister.
