Delbert J. Havel, 84, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Grinnell Christian Church. A flag presentation will be conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Casket Bearers will be his grandchildren, James Havel, Craig Havel, Crystal Havel, Colten Havel, Carly Havel, Holly Deserano, Tristan Deserano, Maria Havel and Sawyer Havel. Cremation will follow the service at the Smith Cremation Center in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Friday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to St. Francis Manor in Grinnell and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Delbert was born on January 17, 1929, in Washington, Iowa to Richard and Matilda Lasek Havel. He was raised in Washington and graduated from Washington High School. Following his education he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. On June 20, 1954, he was married to Carol J. Powell in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived near Washington and operated a grain and livestock farm. Later they lived in the Montezuma and Malcom areas and he worked for the Malcom Elevator and the Cargill Company. They moved to Grinnell in 1985 and he retired in 1993. Delbert enjoyed gardening, woodworking, cooking and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also adored his family and spending time with them. Survivors include his wife, Carol J. Havel of Grinnell; four children, Stanley (Barbara) Havel, Janet Havel and Jeffrey (Joan) Havel, all of Grinnell and Richard (Deb) Havel of Solon, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, Norman Havel of Prairie City, Iowa and Kenneth Havel of Grundy Center, Iowa; and one sister, Alma Tisinger of Iowa City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
