Obituary

Carlyle "Lyle" Phipps, 87, of Grinnell, died on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with Rev. Rose Blank, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be William Tinker. Casket Bearers will be David Phipps, Diane Burk, Steven Phipps, Don Milburn, Larry Wray and Chris Wray. Honorary Bearers will be Joan Milburn, Mary Phipps, Andrew Phipps, Sarah Sills, Samuel Phipps, Daniel Phipps, Emma Phipps, Audra Vann, Adam Burk, Aaron Burk and Tanner Hathaway. Interment with military honors will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. The Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell was in charge of arrangements. Should friends desire memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Lyle was born on December 11, 1925, on the family farm near New Sharon, Iowa to Harry and Iva Macy Phipps. He attended rural school and later attended school in New Sharon before graduating with the Class of 1947 from Grinnell High School. During World War II he served with the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific Theater. After the war he returned to Grinnell and worked for Harlan Cratty at the DX Gas Station. On May 19, 1951, he was married to Velma Wray in Grinnell. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm near Grinnell until 1979. He worked in the Facilities Management Department of Grinnell General Hospital from 1980 to 1990. Prior to his retirement he worked for the Cargill Seed Corn Company in Grinnell. Lyle enjoyed life on the farm, gardening, fishing and watching sporting events. Survivors include his wife, Velma Phipps of Grinnell; three children, David (Mary) Phipps of St. Cloud, MN, Diane (Michael) Burk of Iowa City, IA and Steven Phipps of Urbandale, IA; nine grandchildren, Andrew (Wendi) Phipps, Sarah (Brian) Sills, Samuel Phipps, Daniel Phipps, Emma Phipps, Audra (Jeremy) Vann, Adam (Molly) Burk, Aaron Burk and Tanner Hathaway; one great grandson, Elijah Phipps; one sister, Mildred Spafford of Palm Desert, CA; and three brothers, Carroll Phipps of Lake Havasu, AZ, Les Phipps of San Diego, CA and Keith Phipps of Lakewood, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Nancy Lynn Phipps; and one brother, Gilbert Phipps.
