Obituary

Morris Albert Parslow was born on March 24, 1922, in Williamston, Michigan; he was the second child and the second son of Floyd Parslow and Margaret Traver Parslow. When he was four years old the family moved to Muskegon, Michigan, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He attended Muskegon Junior College for one year and Albion College for one year. After reading an article in Life magazine entitled 'Socrates crosses the Delaware,' he decided 'This is the place for me' and transferred to St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. He was a freshman at St. John's when the U.S. entered World War II. He enlisted in the army in the summer of 1942 and was assigned to the Air Corps. He served in India and on Tinian Island where he saw the first atom bomb. Following his discharge in October, 1945, he resumed his studies at St. John's and received his B.A. in 1948. With the aid of the G.I. Bill he went to France and studied French Literature for one year at Grenoble Universit' and for one semester at Strasbourg Universit'. Upon his admittance to Graduate School at Princeton University he returned to the U.S., earning his Ph.D. in 1954. On June 20, 1951, he married Mich'le Milliat in St. Andr' Catholic Church in Grenoble, France. Dr. Parslow taught at the University of Chicago and at the Oyster Bay branch of New York State University before accepting a position at Grinnell College in 1962. There he rose to the rank of Full Professor and served as Chairman of the French Department, Chairman of the Humanities Division and, for two years, as Chair of the Faculty. He was a member of the Modern Languages Association and of the American Association of University Professors. He retired from Grinnell College in 1992. First and foremost he was a teacher. His character was shaped by his Methodist upbringing and his memories of the Great Depression. He enjoyed listening to Classical music, J.S. Bach and Mozart in particular, and could often be seen walking the family dog throughout Grinnell unitl he suffered a stroke in December, 2004. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mich'le, whom he met while both were studying at Grenoble Universit'; three sons, Peter of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Tristram (Dr. Carolyn Katzen) of Atlanta, Georgia and Dr. Christopher (Christina Trier) of Middletown, Connecticut; one daughter, Catherine (Mark) Kaplan of Chicago, Illinois; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Th'r'se Kaplan and Olivia Trier Parslow. He was preceded in death by his two brothers and one sister. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
