Obituary

Montie L. Hammond, age 82, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Kathryn Roys, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell, officiating. Pallbearers are Travis Hammond, Tim Hammond, Brian Kenkel, Dustin Cummings, Pat Supple, Nick Peiffer, Mike Hudnutt and Royal Roland. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the family present to greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the St. Francis Manor Foundation and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.smithfh.com. Montie Leon Hammond was born on August 26, 1931, in Beaman, Iowa, to Andy and Zola (Schryver) Hammond. He was raised on the family farm near Beaman and he graduated from Beaman High School in 1949. He was a gifted athlete and was nominated All-State in basketball while playing at Beaman High School. He was united in marriage to Betty Jean Howard on October 23, 1949, in Grundy Center, Iowa. They farmed near Conrad until 1959, and then moved to Grinnell, where they owned and operated Wayne's Steak House. A few years later, they purchased Farmers Exchange Company and Grinnell Feed and Grain. He then managed the Malcom Cooperative for nine years before managing the Lime Springs Cooperative in Lime Springs, Iowa. Upon his retirement from agriculture, Montie was involved in banking and real estate. Montie was a long-time member of the Grinnell Golf and Country Club and the Grinnell Elks Lodge. He served on the St. Francis Manor Foundation board and was past president of the United Suppliers Company board. He held a passion for flying and acquired his pilot's license at a young age. His enjoyments included playing golf, fishing, pheasant hunting, swimming with his grandchildren in the pool house he and Betty built on the family farm, and going to Palm Desert, California in the winter months. Montie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty J. Hammond of Grinnell; his son, Rick (Valerie) Hammond of Grinnell; 2 grandsons, Travis (Kristi) Hammond of Haslet, Texas and Tim (Colleen Schmitt) Hammond of Grinnell; one granddaughter, Tanya (Anthony) Green of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 5 great grandchildren, Whitney (C.J.), Emily, Cristiano, Denzil, and Lily; one great great granddaughter, Audrey; and one brother, Veryl Hammond of Eldora, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Delos Hammond.
