Mildred I. Humphrey, age 93, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Oaknoll Retirement Center in Iowa City. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery in rural Victor, Iowa. Mildred was born December 1, 1920, in rural Poweshiek County, Iowa, to Charles Max and Ella Marie Roth Stoker. She was a graduate of the University Of Iowa School of Nursing. On November 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to James Thomas Humphrey in Chicago, Illinois. They made their long time home in Ottumwa, Iowa, where Mildred practiced nursing in a doctor's office. Over the years she enjoyed knitting, rose gardening, ceramics, traveling, and her extended family. Mildred spent her final years at Oaknoll Retirement Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Merlin Carl Stoker, and a niece, Virginia Louise Stoker. She is survived by her 17 beloved nieces and nephews. Mildred will be fondly remembered as a kind, gentle, and gracious lady.
