Michaella Saunders, 35, of Grinnell and formerly of Montezuma, died on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at the Grinnell Christian Church. Interment will be at Westfield Cemetery south of Grinnell. A reception will follow at the Eagles in Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 9, 2022, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and her family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Memorials may be designated to the Michaella Saunders Memorial Fund to benefit local organizations and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Michaella Leah Henkle was born the daughter of Michael and Brenda (Thompson) Henkle on February 8, 1987, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised in Montezuma, Iowa and graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 2005. She attended Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown, Iowa. Michaella was united in marriage to Terry Saunders on June 10, 2017, at her grandparent's, Bill and Leila Henkle, farm pond near Montezuma. They resided in Gilman, Iowa for several years before purchasing Terry's grandparent's, Dick and Molly Saunders, acreage south of Grinnell. Michaella was employed at Southards Implement John Deere dealership in Grinnell and then for New Century FS in Grinnell, where her and Terry met. Michaella loved the outdoors, especially camping, going for horse rides, attending the Iowa State Fair, and swimming in her parent's pool. She will be remembered as a great friend to many, for her love of animals, and for being the most dependable, supportive, and caring person you have ever met. Michaella is survived by her husband, Terry Saunders of Grinnell; stepchildren, Taylor, Macy (Tristan), Addison; her dog, Josie; her parents, Michael and Brenda Henkle of Montezuma; her brother, Thomas (Cori) Henkle of Montezuma and their children, Abbi and Tait; her maternal grandmother, Mary Thompson of Hartwell, GA; her maternal grandfather, Glenn (Amy) Thompson of Pendergrass, GA; her paternal grandmother, Leila Henkle of Montezuma; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Bill Henkle; paternal step grandmother Molly Saunders; and stepson, Brant Saunders.
