Obituary

Mike Shuler, age 56, of Kellogg, died on Saturday, April 4, 2015, in Salem, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor John Epperson officiating. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, and the family will be present to greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Michael R. Shuler Memorial Fund, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Michael Richard Shuler was born on April 26, 1958, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Richard John Shuler and Lillian Alice (Green) Shuler. He was raised on the family farm near Gilman and graduated from SEMCO High School in Gilman with the class of 1976. He then attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. Following his education, he was employed at Donaldson Company in Grinnell as a welder and was a dedicated worker of 27 years. He was a lifelong member of the United Auto Workers Local 1201 and served as the union vice president. Mike was a family man. He dearly loved his niece and nephews and enjoyed attending their sports and school activities. He was also an outdoorsman who enjoyed tending to his garden, camping, riding horses and going on fishing trips with his buddies from Donaldson's. He held a special love for his Red Healer dog, Dusty. Mike is survived by his parents, Richard and Alice "Tootie" Shuler of Kellogg, Iowa ; sister, Michelle (Doug) Beals of Marshalltown, Iowa; brother, Mark Shuler of Kissimmee, Florida; niece and nephews, Dan Beals and Hailee Beals, both of Dubuque, and Mason Shuler of Kellogg; and his dog, Dusty.
