Obituary

She was born on March 7, 1919, in Appanoose County, Iowa, to John and Elizabeth King Large. She attended rural school near Sedan, Iowa. During the Depression she attended the National Youth Association in Centerville, Iowa to train as a welder. Following her education she moved to Seattle, Washington and worked in a ship yard. During World War II she worked for the Boeing Company building airplanes. Following the war she returned to Grinnell to care for her ailing parents and worked at Midwest Manufacturing Company in Kellogg and later for the Maytag Company in Newton. Prior to her retirement in 1989, she worked as an electrician for the Honeywell Corporation in San Diego, California. She moved to Grinnell in 1989 and has resided at Friendship Manor Care Centre since 2000. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Mayme was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Buddy Large and William Emperley; and six sisters, Eva Smith, Nellie Gardner, Maggie Alter, Nina Johnson, Sophia Large and Amy Large. Memorials may be directed to Stewart Library in Grinnell.
