Max was born on April 17, 1937, in Grinnell, the son of Vance and Margaret Poots Bennington. He was raised in Grinnell and attended school there.
On June 3, 1962, he was united in marriage to Linda Rae Matteson, in Grinnell. A loving union of 59 years!
Max started his radio career in 1959 with KCOB in Newton. In 1969, WHO radio in Des Moines discovered his natural-sounding broadcast voice and quickly offered him a job; he would stay with WHO until his retirement, after 34 years, in 2003. During his time with WHO, he ran the control boards for the morning radio shows, including Van & Connie, and later with later Van & Bonnie. He would lend his unique voice to many, many radio commercial spots and advertising promos, which reached a broad audience for many years.
Max enjoyed fishing and camping along the Iowa River and Diamond Lake (near Montezuma); this is what he enjoyed best, the simple life with his family, sitting around a campfire playing his guitar and singing. He loved bowling and playing golf, and held a great sense of humor. Most importantly, was his love for his family; his integrity, his moral character, and gift for love defined him.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; his daughter, Susan (Todd) Schmidt; his granddaughter, Ashley Symbol; and his sister, Virginia Gillaspie; all of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
