Obituary

Matthew A. Henderson, 32, of Grinnell and formerly of Rochester, Minnesota, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at Mary Greely Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at the Grinnell Christian Church with Rev. Tim Stewart of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Casket bearers will be Nate Donner, Bill Donovan, Ed Elliott, Drew Frana, Mark Reinking, Dave Rogotzke, Joe Shields, and Chris Wilson. Visitation hours will be held from 12 noon to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 5 ' 8 p.m on Monday evening. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the Matthew A. Henderson Memorial Fund. Friends may send the family condolence messages by submitting them on the Smith Funeral Home website at www.smithfh.com. Matthew was born the son of Patricia Ann Fairchild and Norman W. Henderson on May 30, 1972, in Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1990 Grinnell High School graduate. Matt worked with his uncle Randy as an auto mechanic during and after his high school years. He then was employed at Donaldson's in Grinnell as a welder for ten years. His most recent occupation was a supervisor at Wal-Mart in Rochester, Minnesota, before moving back to Grinnell last month to be closer to his family. Matt was a competitive person who enjoyed playing golf and slow pitch softball. He loved to debate with people and used his quick wit and straight-forwardness to make sure he was getting his point across. He enjoyed collecting sports cards and comic books and could be found in his free time watching Sponge Bob Squarepants on Cartoon Network. Matt held a special love for his family, especially his nieces, nephews and cousins as he watched them grow up. Matt will be remembered for his caring and kind manner; as shown through his many friends that will miss him. Matt is survived by his parents, Ann (James) Bell of Grinnell and Norman (Vicki) Henderson of Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma, Iowa; his brothers, Patrick (Keri) Henderson of Ames and Andrew Henderson of Grinnell; his grandparents, Odell Fairchild of Grinnell, and Don and Carol Henderson of Lynnville; his great grandmother, May Slagle of Grinnell; his stepbrothers, Allan Burkett of Newton, Iowa, and Shane Burkett of Grimes, Iowa; his stepsisters, Deanna Owens of Grandview, Missouri, and Stephanie Chiarito of Chicago, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Matt was thirty-two years of age and was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lucille Fairchild; his aunt, Imegene Fairchild; his uncle, Randy Fairchild; and his stepbrother, Chad Burkett.
