Matthew James Carey died at his home in Southfield, Michigan on November 30, 2025. Born on July 26,1961, to Dwight and Meda Carey in Grinnell, Iowa, Matt was father to James and Lauren and brother to Jeffrey, Deborah, Candace, Rebecca and Sarah.

Matt was an all-round athlete, running cross-country, playing tennis, baseball and golf. He particularly loved basketball, reaching the Iowa high school state tournament in 1979 and earning a sports scholarship to WestMar College. His basketball years in particular brought joy to Dwight and Meda, who were happy to travel to watch him play. Matt loved music and performed in a few local bands over the years, singing and playing drums.

Matt was a smart and terrifically funny man who was very proud of his children, hugely sentimental and truly never met a stranger. He spent his career in sales and marketing as an account executive at metro Detroit radio and television stations. Matt was passionate about community outreach and was very proud to help create the annual 97.9 FM WJLB Coats for Kids campaign. Each year the Coats for Kids campaign gives away free winter coats for children in need.
