Matthew Simpson Peiffer was born the son of Elmer Paul Peiffer and Bonnie J. (Simpson) Peiffer on April 2, 1956 in Washington, Iowa. He was raised in Washington and Grinnell, Iowa respectively, and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1974. During his high school years, he worked for Eckerman Jewelry. He attended Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, where he met the love of his life, Ann Louise Bunch.
Matt was united in marriage to Ann on July 31, 1977 at St. Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles, California. The couple lived in Los Angeles until 1983, when they moved to Grinnell. Matt joined the family business, Poweshiek Abstract, which was founded by his mother in 1974. For nearly 40 years, Matt has provided abstracting services to those in Poweshiek County. He was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was also a member of Grinnell Country Club, where he served as past president, Iowa Land Title Association, Grinnell Chamber of Commerce, Pheasants Forever, and St. Francis Manor.
Matt knew the fundamentals of life: the strong love of family, devoted faith in Christ, being a loyal, genuine friend, and enjoying the tranquility of the outdoors. He loved the holidays, especially Christmas, when the family would gather at their house and he would read "The Night Before Christmas" to his grandchildren, with them snuggling next to him in their pajamas. His presence brought calmness, good times, comfort, and good conversation. He enjoyed golfing, pheasant hunting, fishing, smoking meats for family meals, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, taking weekend trips with Ann, attending Sunday matinees, and taking a good nap. Matt's legacy will be everlasting and carried on through those who were blessed by his kindness, his quick wit, his honesty, his voice of reason, his love, and his patience.
Matt is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ann Peiffer of Grinnell; children, Stephanie (Andrew) Hoopes and their children, Jack, Aaden, Ben and Anna, Nick Peiffer and his sons, Alex and Eli, Sam (Lindsey) Peiffer and their son, Theodore, and Madison (Nick) Brooks and their children, Blake and Luke, all of Grinnell; his sister, Debbi (Jerry) Murty of Tama, Iowa; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
