Mary "Lee" McCurry, 86, of Grinnell, Iowa, died on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at the First Friends Church in Grinnell with Rev. Todd Follette officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorials may be directed to the First Friends Church or to St. Francis Manor Foundation. Lee was born on July 9, 1925, in Grinnell, Iowa to Maurice "Ben" and Lois Sears Thompson. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated with the Class of 1942 from Grinnell High School. Following her education she worked as a telephone operator for the General Telephone Company. On July 26, 1942, she was married to Clarence "Duke" McCurry in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple lived in various communities in Nebraska and Missouri before returning to Grinnell in the early 1990s. Lee was a member of the First Friends Church of Grinnell, the Lady Elks, the American Legion Auxiliary and was Past President of the PEO Chapter AM in Grinnell. Her hobbies included solving crossword puzzles, listening to gospel music, and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones and the Missouri Tigers. She was also an avid letter writer. Survivors include her son, Kenneth McCurry of Grinnell; her daughter, Cynthia Davis of Malcom; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Stephens of Toledo and Doris Flanagan of Ames. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, Laverne Thompson.
