Obituary

Mary Jane Lyon, 75, of Grinnell died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center, Monarch Hospice Wing, in Newton. Services and burial are pending at a later date in Colorado. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Skiff Medical Center, Monarch Hospice Wing. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements. The daughter of Lorne and Edith Janzen Barnes, she was born April 14, 1930, in Lakefield, Minnesota, where she was raised and educated. She was married in 1967 to Sherman C. Lyon in Elgin, Illinois. She was self-employed and was quite successful as an antique dealer while living most of her adult life in Firestone, Colorado. She moved to Grinnell in 2003. She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She and her family have become strong advocates of regular colonoscopies which diagnose early on the preventable life threatening disease of colon cancer. Survivors include two children, Lorna Gentz of Grinnell and Steve Shumake of Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers, Bill Barnes of Belle Fourche, South Dakota and Jim Barnes of Independence, Iowa; four sisters, Betty Larson of Everett, Washington, Jean Larson of Pullallup, Washington, Carolyn Palmer of Lake Stevens, Washington, Lucille Cross of Olympia, Washington; and three grandchildren, Ronald Musial, Jr. of Riverview, Florida, and Christopher and Michael Shumake, both of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Lorna Jones; and one brother, Bob Barnes.
