Obituary

Mary Lou Doty, age 74 of Grinnell, died on Monday, January 11, 2021 at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. A public visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Monday, January 25, 2021 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and her family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A face mask will be required for those attending the visitation. A public funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the Grinnell Christian Church with Pastor Scott Surovec officiating. Interment will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. A face mask will be required for those attending the funeral service. The funeral service will be live streamed on the Smith Funeral Home Facebook page beginning at 10:15 am. Memorials may be designated to the Mary Lou Doty Memorial Fund, to benefit local organizations of the family's choice, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Mary Lou Martindale was born on October 27, 1946 in Burlington, Iowa, to Harry Willis Martindale and Velma Izeta (McKeown) Martindale. She was raised in Burlington and Grinnell, Iowa, respectively. She graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1964. Mary Lou was united in marriage to Marvin Edward Doty on December 16, 1966 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Scott and a daughter, Jennifer. They resided in Grinnell all of their married lives and were members of the First Presbyterian Church. Mary Lou worked at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance and was a receptionist for many years at Vogue hair salon in Grinnell. She recently worked at Michelle's Dance Academy in Grinnell. Mary Lou's family and friends were her greatest loves and blessings. She was a people person who surrounded herself with the people she loved. Her bright smile, fun-loving personality, and contagious laugh made her the life of the gathering. Her enjoyments were taking road trips with family and friends, bowling, and most importantly, following her grandchildren's activities and cheering them on at their sporting events. Mary Lou will be remembered as an angel among us, who blessed those around her with her gift of love, laughter, kindness, and support. Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 54 years, Marvin Doty of Grinnell; son, Scott Doty of Grinnell; daughter, Jennifer (Frank) Moseley of Crete, Illinois; grandchildren, Jessica Moseley and Alexander Pothoven; brother, Ed Martindale of Havelock, NC; and sister-in-law, Sue Martindale of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Jacob Moseley; sister, Lyla Stout; and brother, Harvey Martindale.
