The daughter of William Clark and Mildred Bonita Dean Cunningham, she was born September 18, 1925, in Des Moines. She was raised in Des Moines and was a 1943 graduate of Des Moines East High School and later AIB. After her education she was employed as a secretary for M.D. Lewis (her future father-in-law), who was the State of Iowa Conservation Commissioner.
On September 12, 1947, she was married to M. Donald Lewis in Des Moines. The couple moved to Grinnell in 1948, where they owned and operated Cunningham Plumbing and Heating for many years. She could help a customer in the plumbing shop, find the part they needed, and could even thread a pipe, just like the men in the shop. She retired in 1990.
Mary was an active member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Grinnell American Legion Auxiliary, Grinnell Lady Elks, and Grinnell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, where she was a buyer for the gift shop, which she really enjoyed. She was also a member of TTT, Sunset Club, and the Soroptomist Club, where she was past president. She was an avid bridge player and a member of several card clubs.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her two grandsons and taking them on fun trips to nearby attractions. She also enjoyed going to high school football games.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathy J. (David A.) Thom of Cambridge; one brother, John (Jo) Cunningham of Aiken, South Carolina; and two grandchildren, Jacob M. and Michael L. Thom, both of Ames. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; one daughter, Deborah L. Taylor; and one sister, Joann Neilson.
