Obituary

Mary was born on November 13, 1920, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Clarence and Arminda Keenan Garrett. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated with the Class of 1939 from Grinnell High School. During World War II she worked in an ammunition plant in Newton. On June 25, 1946, she was married to Carroll W. Dean in Atchison, Kansas. The couple made their home in Grinnell and she worked at Swift and Company, the Grinnell Shoe Company, and Miracle Recreation Company. From 1969 to 1986, she worked as a metal preparer at Thomberts, Inc. in Newton. Mary was a member of the U.A.W. Union Local 997, the Eagles Club of Grinnell and the VFW Auxiliary of Tama. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo at the Grinnell Senior Citizen's Center and she played softball and bowled when she was younger. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending their school and sports activities. Survivors include her children, Garrett W. Dean of Springfield, Missouri, Larry W. Dean of Albuquerque, N.M., Meredith Davis and Michella Kelso, both of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Dale of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Clarence Garrett; and six sisters, Roberta Garrett, Martha Garrett, Bonnie Tiedemann, Bernice Zaugh, Maude Hagensick and Tony Hobbs. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
