Dean Douglas, 80, of Grinnell died July 29, 2014, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Orlan Mitchell of Grinnell officiating. Honorary bearers will be Bill Bennett, Dick Douglas, Larry Goodrich, Roger Mason, Bud Pease and Paul Peiffer. Burial will be held at a later date at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 4:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or Wounded Warrior Project. Dean was born December 17, 1933, on a farm near Malcom, the son of Emmett Dean and Gladys Vivian Kenyon Douglas. He was raised in the Malcom area and was a 1951 graduate of Malcom High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps from 1953 until 1956. After his discharge, with the rank of Sergeant, he traveled for the Rock Island Railroad for several years. On January 9, 1960, he was united in marriage with Barbara Sutten, in Morrison, Illinois. In 1961, he began working for his father-in-law at Sutten Service Station in Newburg. The business was later sold to Gulf Oil Company in 1968 and he continued his employment with them until 1973. He then became a realtor and started Dean Douglas Realty in Grinnell, where he was also active in many community business organizations. In 1984, he began employment with Grinnell College and he retired as the college post office manager in 1998. While there, he particularly enjoyed his college employment working with the international students. For 15 years, he enjoyed wintering in Texas. Dean was a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge, Grinnell Eagles Club, Grinnell Lions Club, Grinnell Jaycee's, Izaak Walton League and a member of the Newburg American Legion for over 50 years. While in Texas, he was a member of the Southern Comfort Bicycle Club. Dean was a good man and loved his family dearly! He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, bicycling, boating, water skiing and camping. He was an avid reader of western-themed books and enjoyed listening to country music, especially songs by George Jones whom he got to know while serving together in the Marine Corps. Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Grinnell; two children, Julie (Ed) Austin of Cedarburg, Wisconsin and Scott (Kerry) Douglas of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Brady (Christena) Austin of Grafton, Wisconsin, Trevor and Toby Austin, both of Verona, Wisconsin, Baxter Austin of Cedarburg and Samantha Hulet of Granville, Illinois; one great-grandson, Julian Austin of Grafton and several nieces and nephews, including Dick Douglas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Douglas and one sister, Charlotte Fleener.
