Obituary

Marvin E. Billman, 90, of Grinnell, died on Friday, December 23, 2016, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Casket Bearers will be Greg Billman, Joshua Billman, Robert Billman, Brad Billman, Chris Billman, Dan McCarty, Jeff McCulley, Joe Schmidt, Scott Schmidt, Jesse Stiefel, Greg Stock and David Whetstone. Honorary Bearers will be his granddaughters, Jessica Billman, Stephanie McCarty, Abby McCulley, Ashley Stock, Kasi Stiefel, and Kari Whetstone. Military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Military Funeral Honor Guard from Camp Dodge. Interment will be at the Pleasant Township Cemetery near Ewart, Iowa. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Hammond Center of St. Francis Manor and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Marvin was born on October 18, 1926, near Brooklyn, Iowa to Carroll and Avis Kilmer Billman. He was raised in rural Poweshiek County and attended rural schools. The family moved to State Center, Iowa and he attended State Center High School. In 1945, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served with the transportation corps in the South Pacific Theatre. On March 21, 1948, he was united in marriage to Virginia Morrison in Marshalltown, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked as a mechanic for Mitchell Motors. In 1950, the family moved to the family farm southeast of Grinnell and he operated a grain and livestock farm most of his life. Marvin was a member of the Eagles Lodge, the American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He and Virginia enjoyed playing cards with friends as well as following baseball at the local and professional levels. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Billman of Grinnell; his children, Larry Billman of Phoenix, AZ, Dave Billman, Kathy Elliott and Karen Billman, all of Grinnell; 11 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one brother, Elmer Billman of Prior Lake, MN; and one sister, Sarah Jane Grapper of Pratt, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gary (1993) and Richard (2012) Billman; and two sisters, Irene Bailey and Wilma "Billie" Kinzebach.
