Obituary

Marvin Beck, 75 of Malcom died July 14, 2014, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Poweshiek County with Muriel Johannessen, St. John's Lutheran Church, officiating. Organist will be Teresa Ziegenmeyer and vocalists will be Laura Cline and Bonnie Beck. Pallbearers will be Joseph and Corey Van Otegham and Nick, Nate, John, Clayton and Noah Beck. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Malcom Fire Department or Trinity Lutheran Church. Marvin was born July 6, 1939, in Grinnell, the son of Walter and Marie Dee Beck. He was raised on the family farm near Malcom and was a 1957 graduate of Malcom High School. After his graduation he was employed at the Fred Beck Service Station in Malcom. On January 22, 1959, he was united in marriage with Ruth Anna Graham at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in the Malcom and Brooklyn area all his life. From 1967 to 1983, he also drove a truck independently hauling water, grain, tile and gravel. He served on the Malcom Co-op Board for nine years. Marvin loved everything having to do with farming and running a successful farm operation. He took great pride in his grandchildren and he loved them dearly. He enjoyed fishing locally, gardening and playing cards. He was a sports fan and enjoyed following both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones athletic teams. Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Malcom; four children, Theresa (Tracy) Yoder of Malcom, Valerie (Chuck) Van Otegham of Hartwick, Steve (Teresa) Beck of Brooklyn and Greg (Sandy) Beck of Malcom; three brothers, Lyle (Katie) Beck of Malcom, Donald (Nancy) Beck of Grinnell and Melvin (Donna) Beck of Grinnell; and 11 grandchildren, Joseph and Corey Van Otegham and Bonnie, Stephanie, Nicklas, Nathan, Hope, Noah, John, Clayton and Kayleen Beck. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild, Carrie Jean Beck and his mother-in-law, Ella Graham.
