Obituary

Marie A. DeBoef, age 87 of Grinnell, died on Monday, June 4, 2018 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7th at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Pastor Jim Dotson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to her service from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorials may be designated to Grinnell Regional Hospice and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Marie was born on March 26th, 1931 in Prairie City Iowa, the daughter of William and Maida Bell Charles Elrod. She was raised on a farm south of Prairie City and attended a county grade school. She was a graduate of Prairie City High School in 1949 and then went on to attend Drake University. On February 20th, 1951 she was united in marriage to Virgil DeBoef at the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Prairie City, Iowa. They lived in New Sharon, Iowa, were stationed in San Diego, California during Virgil's military service, and later settled on the family farm in Prairie City. Marie stayed home to raise her children and work on the family farm. Faith was important to Marie and her strong Christian ethic was evident in the way she lived her life. She was a dedicated Sunday school teacher and volunteered for many different Christian ministries during her lifetime. Swedish Weaving was her passion and her children and grandchildren were the recipients of many blankets that were made with love for her family. Virgil and Marie retired to Grinnell from Albert Lee, Minnesota in 2001. Marie is survived by four children, Wayne (Vicki) DeBoef of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lee (Jeff) DeBoef Smith of Grinnell, Daniel (Debbie) DeBoef of Mitchellville, Iowa, and James (Jill) DeBoef of Rochester, Minnesota; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, Virgil in 2004, and two grandsons.
