Marie Caillouette, 77, of Brooklyn, died on Monday, July 13, 2026 at Brooklyn Community Estates.
No services will be held. Memorial contributions in her memory may be designated to Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell or to Kent Chapel north of Brooklyn and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
Marie Elizabeth Swain was born on November 8, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, to Louis Fred Swain and Ruth Emily (Huck) Swain. She was raised in Newton, Iowa, and graduated from Newton High School with the Class of 1966.
On February 14, 1970, she was united in marriage to David Cottrell. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Doug, Scott, Jeannie, and Amy. Together, they made their home in Newton before residing in Brooklyn. They later divorced. Marie was later married to Leo “Joe” Caillouette.
Marie cherished her family above all else and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting, collecting Campbell’s soup memorabilia, and admiring the artwork of Thomas Kinkade. Those who knew Marie will remember her feisty spirit, quick wit, and sassy personality, which brought laughter and joy to those around her.
Marie is survived by her children, Doug (Wendy) Cottrell of Malcom, Scott (Carrie) Cottrell of Brooklyn, Jeannie Mullins of Williamson, and Amy Schaefer of Brooklyn; her grandchildren, Paige (Anthony) Goemaat of Oskaloosa, Ian (Amelia) Mullins of Newton, Samantha (Chris) Mullins of West Des Moines, Makaela Lloyd of Grinnell, Dustin Tratchel, Morgan Tratchel, Reagan Cottrell of Newton, Austin Fischer of Deep River, Emily (Casey) Burkle of Grinnell, and Leah Hall of Brooklyn; her step grandchildren, Kristin Metz of Leavenworth, Kansas and Kathryn (Austin) Jacobs of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; and her great grandsons, Noah Burkle and Creed Mullins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Caillouette; and her grandson, Dalton Cottrell.
