Margaret H. Reid, 93, of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and formerly of Grinnell, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the Fairview Commons Nursing Center in Great Barrington. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be in Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be held one hour prior to her service. Condolences may be shared with her family online at www.smithfh.com. Margaret was born on January 3, 1924, to James and Harriet (Armstrong) Gauley in Deep River, Iowa. She was raised in the Deep River area and graduated from Deep River High School in 1942. On September 23, 1944, Margaret enlisted in the United States Navy and served with the WAVES during WWII. She was a communications technician and served in Bronx, New York, Washington D.C. and Bethesda, Maryland. Margaret was honorably discharged on June 10, 1948. In 1951, Margaret married Charles Edward Jackson, and a daughter, Bonita, resulted from this union. They later divorced in 1954. She went to school to learn bookkeeping and raised her daughter on her own. On December 31, 1977, she was united in marriage to Edward Reid and the couple made their home in Chicago. She retired in 1978 due to a crippling stroke. In her youth, Margaret loved to dance, travel and dabbled in ceramics. In her 70s she learned how to paint in watercolor and produced many pictures of landscapes and flowers. She was curious about all things in life, especially nature, health and politics. Always hungry for answers; she spent hours listening to NPR and researching on the Web – conquering the computer at age 85! Margaret loved her family, being a mother, a sister and friend. She is survived by her only daughter, Bonita (Richard) Lovison of Becket, Massachusetts; two sisters, Eunice Martin of Indianapolis, Indiana and Mildred King of Grinnell; her nieces and nephews, Connie Newman, Louise Beem, James King, Keith King, Kenny King, Dennis Gauley, Cecil Martin and Bobby Gauley. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward Reid; her sister Clara McMeekin and three brothers, Elmer, Robert and Melvin Gauley.
