Obituary

Margaret Brobyn Hoefert, 92, of Grinnell died Monday, May 30, 2005, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Private family graveside services and burial will be held Saturday morning at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Seeland Park Tenplex of St. Francis Manor. Visitation with the family present will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Margaret B. Hoefert Memorial Fund. The daughter of James and Helen Hood Newton, she was born September 18, 1912, in Minneapolis where she was raised and educated. She received a nursing degree at the University of Minnesota and then did post graduate work in obstetrics at Women's Hospital in Detroit. She was married to Dr. Thomas E. Brobyn December 9, 1935, in Detroit and the couple moved to Grinnell in 1937. She was a homemaker and was active with PEO, Sunset Club, and Drummond Club. Following the death of her husband in 1966, she was employed in 1967 as head nurse of the OB Department at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. She was married to Dr. K.L. 'Jim' Hoefert April 29, 1972, in Des Moines and the couple continued making their home in Grinnell. She retired from Grinnell Regional Medical Center in 1987. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Jim Hoefert of Grinnell; three children, Dr. Thomas Brobyn of Philadelphia, Susan Brobyn Moore of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sarah Brobyn Petrello of Brooklyn, New York; three step-children, John Hoefert of Houston, Texas, Donald Hoefert of Watertown, South Dakota, and Dorothy Lumsden of Carlisle; one sister, Catherine Canfield of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; and one sister, Charlotte Layrac.
