Obituary

Lyle Routier, age 87, of Grinnell, died on Monday, April 24, 2017, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 28, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor John Epperson officiating. Pallbearers are Bryce Doane, Chad Dye, Kevin Lamb, Tyler Routier, Jason Weldon, and Justin Weldon. Honorary bearers are Webb Anderson, Rollie Welcher, Harold Hoskins, Richard Palmers, Warren (Ike) Roberts, and Keith Davis. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home and his family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Grinnell Elks Lodge or the Grinnell Eagles Club and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Lyle Jess Routier was born the son of Russell Jess Routier and Ruth Nadine (Dobson) Routier on February 17, 1930, in Clutier, Iowa. He was raised near Clutier for a short while before the family moved to Grinnell. He graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1948. Lyle worked for several area Grinnell businesses, which included Three Elms, Grinnell Glove Factory, Grinnell Shoe Factory, and C&K Transfer. He was united in marriage to Mary Ruth Davis on January 21, 1950, in Newton, Iowa. The couple made their home in Grinnell before moving to Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma, Iowa in 1969. They moved to Newburg in 1987 and returned to Grinnell in 2009. Lyle worked at Maytag in Newton for 37 years and retired at the age of 57 in 1987. He was a member of over 50 years at the Grinnell Eagles Club and had recently joined the Grinnell Elks Club. Lyle was a hard worker who always provided for his family. His enjoyments included watching game shows and Iowa Hawkeye games on television, watching RDF-TV on Saturday nights, dancing, wintering in Texas, attending monkey business meetings with his fellow Maytag retirees, and going camping, fishing, and boating with his family. Lyle is survived by his children, Marj Smith of Grinnell, Connie (Darrel) Lamb of Grinnell, Cindy Weldon of Belle Plaine, Iowa, and Roger (June) Routier of Gilman, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; siblings, Lawrence Routier of Moravia, Iowa, Leslie (Linda) Routier of Grinnell, and Leonard (Sarilda) Routier of Lubbock, Texas; and daughter-in-law, Irma Dye of Mission, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ruth Routier on Friday, March 4, 2011; infant daughter, Linda Sue Routier; son, Larry Dye on February 8, 2017; sisters, Linda Lou Routier in infancy, and Lila Bell; sons-in-law, Jim Weldon and Art Smith; sister-in-law, Darlene Routier; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Bell.
