Obituary

Lyle Muckler, 88, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson, Chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Casket Bearers will be his grandchildren. The Iowa Funeral Honor Guard of Camp Dodge will perform the military honors. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Thursday, March 16, 2017, and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2017. Memorials may be directed to St. Francis Manor or to Grinnell Regional Hospice. Lyle was born on March 18, 1928, in Grinnell, Iowa to Irvin and Mary Ahrens Muckler. He was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School in 1945. Following his high school graduation he worked as a farm hand for John Ahrens. On November 6, 1950, he entered the United States Army and served as a radio operator during the Korean Conflict. In 1956, he was united in marriage to Saundra Sue Robison in Grinnell, and to this union was born three children, Greg, Lynda and Doug. Lyle worked for the Miracle Recreation Company in Grinnell and Monett, Missouri as Vice President of Shipping and Scheduling. After his retirement, he worked in buildings and grounds at Ahrens Park. Lyle enjoyed hunting and later became an avid bowler and golfer. He was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include his three children, Greg (Janet) Muckler of Grinnell, Lynda (Mike) Emmert of Hallstead, PA and Doug (Chris) Muckler of Durham, N.C.; ten grandchildren, Jennifer (Kevin) McAlexander, Travis Muckler, Jeremy (Cigi) Muckler, Trenton (Kirstin) Emmert, Abby Emmert, Bob (Jennifer) Emmert, Amanda Emmert, and Brittney, Madeline and Meredith Muckler; eight great grandchildren, Isaiah, Parker and Ella McAlexander, Cooper and Palmer Muckler, Dylan and Karlie Emmert and Kaylee Aranda; and two sisters, Evelyn (Tom) Thompson of Marshalltown and Nancy (Larry) Kunce of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
