Lucille Hiner, 92, of Grinnell, died on Friday, July 31, 2015, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her service. Memorials may be directed to the Lucille Hiner Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Lucille was born on November 4, 1922 in Monticello, Kentucky to Lewis and Dora (Bridgeman) Asberry. When she was 16, the family moved to Grinnell so her dad could work for the Rock Island Railroad. She attended school in Grinnell. On March 11, 1951, she was united in marriage to Howard Hiner in New Castle, Indiana. She was a homemaker and spent many hours sewing, quilting and cooking. Everyone always looked forward to the Sunday gatherings. There was always pie (usually apple), cornbread muffins, cherry turnovers and more than enough food for everyone. She enjoyed watching WWF and could tell you about the wrestlers, as well as reading The Star and National Inquirer, because everything is true in those papers! Lucille loved to play the guitar and sing. She cherished every moment she could spend with her twin sisters, Eva and Neva. Lucille was a spunky, strong willed woman and made sure her opinion was heard. Her greatest gift in life was her family; especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lucille's memory will be treasured by her daughter, Sandy Sheets of Grinnell; her son, Kenny (Susan) Hiner of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Donna (Dennis) Austin, Debbie Sheets, Hannah Bebb and Josh Hiner; five great grandchildren, Jessica (Melvin) Parrott, Lisa Austin, Ricky Dudley Jr., Cody Dudley and Abby Bebb; her twin sisters, Eva Fortner and Neva VanGorp, both of Grinnell; and her brother, Carson Asberry of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died in 1972; her sister, Lillian Criswell; her brother, Bill Asberry and three siblings in infancy.
