Lowell was born on March 27, 1936, in Corsica, South Dakota, to John and Elizabeth (DeBoer) Goemaat. He was raised and educated in Corsica. Following his education, Lowell honorably served in the United States Air Force.

On October 2, 2000, Lowell was united in marriage to Linda Mae Figland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. A hardworking man, Lowell farmed corn and soybeans and raised cattle on his farm near Lynnville for 50 years. In addition to farming, he worked at Maytag Manufacturing and as a heavy equipment operator. He retired in 2015 and moved to Grinnell.

A man of simple pleasures, Lowell enjoyed riding his 1966 Harley Davidson Electra Glide, hunting of all kinds, collecting guns, and dancing. He and Linda created many fond memories socializing and dancing with friends at weekend gatherings.

Faith, family, and country were central to Lowell's heart. A firm believer in Christ, he attended the Taintor Community Church. He deeply loved his family and treasured time spent with them.
