Lona L. Bangham, age 99, of Grinnell, died on Monday, August 3, 2015, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell with her family by her side. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Del Dawes officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark Bair, Joel Bair, Mark Hall, Steve Cox, Hunter Hall, and Avery Cox. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held prior to her service beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be designated to the Grinnell United Methodist Church or to the St. Francis Manor Foundation, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Lona Lois (Wheeler) Bangham, the daughter of Clifton Wallace and Katie Belle (Wurster) Wheeler, was born near Erie, Kansas on August 2, 1916. She moved with her family to a farm southwest of Malcom, Iowa in 1918. She attended country school and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1934. On February 1, 1940, Lona was married to Raymond Fred Bangham in Grinnell, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm, southeast of Grinnell, until they retired and moved to Grinnell in 1983. Lona enjoyed life on the farm, her garden, and doing quilting and craftwork as gifts for the family. She took great pleasure in spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. The nieces, nephews and their families were also a very important part of her life. Lona was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and had worked in the church's primary department for 20 years. She also was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Women, Pythian Sisters, Harmony Ladies Aid and the M&M Club. She is survived by her two daughters, Mary (James) Bair of Grinnell, and Carole (Gale) Douglass of Killen, Alabama; four grandchildren, Mark (Tricia) Bair of Grinnell, Joel (Heather) Bair of North Liberty, Iowa, Clarissa (Mark) Hall of Leighton, Alabama, and Gina (Steve) Cox of Killen, Alabama; seven great grandchildren, Whitney Bair, Adeline and Stella Bair, Julia and Hunter Hall, Avery and Ashlyn Cox; one sister-in-law, Frances Peters of Independence, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond, on July 25, 1997; one brother, Gail Wheeler; and two sisters, Sadie Jensen and Floy Rohlfing.
