Obituary

Loma Louise Pickens Pinkerton, 79, of Grinnell died June 20, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Donavan Van Wyk, Westfield Community Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Christopher, T.J., and Kody Pinkerton, Jim White, Larry Ashing, and Duane Dufoe. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the Pinkerton family present will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Boy Scout Troop 313, Grinnell United Methodist Church, or the Lanny Pinkerton Memorial Scholarship Fund, associated through Grinnell High School. Loma was born on December 7, 1942, in Grinnell, the daughter of William and Darlene Jones Pickens. She was a 1961 graduate of Grinnell High School. On June 13, 1961, she was united in marriage to Leslie Dale Pinkerton, in Grinnell. The couple lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Prairie du Chen, Wisconsin, and several communities in Iowa prior to returning to Grinnell in 1968. While her husband operated his own business, Pink's Welding in Grinnell, she was the bookkeeper. She was employed at several area nursing homes, a long-time florist and designer at Bates Flowers, and later she was employed at Grinnell Mutual Re-Insurance Company prior to her retirement. Loma was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and an active committee member of the Boy Scout Troop #313. Loma's family were her pride and joy, she loved them dearly. She was a firm believer in God and her care for others was evident. She enjoyed visiting and socializing with family and friends, traveling to see family members, including California and Missouri. She enjoyed games, going out to eat, especially Pagliai's, and was an avid reader. Loma was an avid fan of high school and college wrestling and enjoyed attending many wrestling meets. She held a great love for her dog, Gizmo. She is survived by a son, Todd Pinkerton of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa) Pinkerton of Grinnell; T.J. (Alisyn) Pinkerton of Grinnell, and Kody (Carrie) Pinkerton of Kellogg; two brothers, Ronald (Diane) Pickens of Grinnell and Steve (Sherry) Pickens of Marshalltown; a sister-in-law, Mickey Pickens of Grinnell; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale in 1998; a son, Lanny Pinkerton in 1995; and a brother, Dennis Pickens in 2015.
