Lois was born on June 8, 1915, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Berton and Ida Hadley. The family later moved to Des Moines where she spent her early years. On June 15, 1935, Lois was united in marriage to Richard Ullrich, in Spencer, Iowa. The couple lived in Des Moines and moved to Grinnell in 1944, where they lived for the remainder of their lives and were true Grinnellians. Lois was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a beautiful lady known for her sense of style and grace. She loved creating a beautiful home, planning meals, cooking, and entertaining her many friends and family. She was very proud of her Quaker heritage and possessed a strong sense of justice, fairness, equal and civil rights for all. She loved the beauty of nature, animals, birds, and flowers. She found great joy in her many pets and those of her daughters. Lois was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational and served on many church committees. She served and held offices on the board of Grinnell Community Hospital and the Grinnell Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was active in the PTA, and a member of PEO and the LeVart Club. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Dan) Jones and Chris Ullrich of Grinnell; two grandsons, Jeff (Marilyn) Jones of Edinburg, Texas and Scott Jones of Grinnell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Berton and John; and one sister, Marjorie. Lois was the light and center of her family's lives. She brought them unending joy and will be greatly missed. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mayflower Human Needs Fund. To honor Lois' love of animals, the Ullrich family will also make a memorial donation in her name to PALS of Grinnell and Quad Cities Greyhound adoption.
