Obituary

Loanna Bloethe was born December 11, 1922 in her parents' farmhouse in rural Perry, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna (Appenzeller) Schnoor. She grew up on the farm during the Great Depression, learning the joys of work and self-sufficiency at an early age. Following graduation from Perry High School in 1939, Loanna attended the University of Iowa, majoring in food science and clothing and graduated in 1944. While at the University, Loanna spent countless evenings helping to entertain the soldiers-in-training at Tea Dances arranged to raise morale. Upon earning her degree, she taught school for two years in Correctionville, Iowa and then worked as a dietician for United Airlines in Chicago, Illinois and Cheyenne, Wyoming. In August of 1946, her brother Carl brought home a law school classmate, Orville, to attend the State Fair. It was then, in the kitchen of her parents' farmhouse, that Loanna first saw the love of her life. They corresponded faithfully, visited six times over the winter and were married on their seventh date on April 4, 1947. Following Orville's graduation from law school, the couple moved to Victor where Loanna resumed her teaching career at the Victor High School before starting a family. Loanna loved to dance. From the ballet of her childhood to the ballroom dancing of her college days to the square dancing of adulthood, there was no finer way for her to spend an evening. She also treasured creating art, with oil paintings and ceramics being her favorite mediums. As her children grew older, Loanna returned to the University to take graduate courses in art. Her art and gardens have always reflected Loanna's childhood on the farm and her love of nature. Traveling with her family was another of Loanna's passions. Whether it was camping in national parks with her young family or foreign travel with Bloethe, she loved to go. She was a member of the Immanuel Church and later the Victor Methodist Church. Other memberships include a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, a Star Twirler square dancer, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. However, the focus of Loanna's life was unwaveringly her husband and family, to whom she was devoted. No man could have found a more ardent cheerleader, loyal fan or better cook than Orville did. And, no woman could have been as appreciated by a husband as Loanna. Their's truly was a marriage made in heaven and cherished on earth. Her family includes her husband of nearly 62 years, Orville W. Bloethe and her brother Carl Schnoor. She has two sons, Craig Bloethe and Chris Bloethe; and two daughters and their husbands, Tamia and Dennis O'Rourke, and Cheryl Bloethe Linder and Douglas Linder. Loanna also has seven grandchildren, Jamie O'Rourke, Kelly Grabendike, Darcy Huismann, Codie Bloethe, Chase Bloethe, Ann Linder, and Kari Linder. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister Marie Crews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Shantel Lindsey, Doug Powell and the myriad other caregivers from Iowa City Hospice who have brought Loanna so much comfort and care. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either 'Loanna's Community Garden Fund' which will be used to provide landscaping and flowers in the Victor Community Park or the 'HLV Scholarship Fund.'
