Linda Bennington, 78, of Grinnell, passed away on August 13, 2021, at her home of natural causes. She was the wife of Max Bennington who passed away on August 4, 2021. A celebration of life service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 17th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated to the Linda Bennington Memorial Fund. Linda was born on June 22, 1943, in Grinnell, the daughter of Virgil and Blanche Smith Matteson. She was raised in Grinnell and was educated in the Grinnell School District. On June 3, 1962, she was united in marriage to Max Eugene Bennington, in Grinnell. A loving union of 59 years! Linda was employed at several business' in Grinnell including, the bowling alley, Spurgeon's, 4 Winds Motel, Bates Flowers, and St. Francis Manor. But her biggest joy was staying at home and taking care of her family, "everything she needed was here in Grinnell." Her love and devotion for her family was truly evident! Linda loved being in the outdoors and nature; she enjoyed camping and fishing, especially at Diamond Lake, tending to her flower gardens, bird watching, and taking care of her many pets. She held a passion for crocheting, a love for music, and enjoyed watching soap operas and western movies and TV shows (John Wayne was a favorite). Linda was a great cook and a great baker; a favorite family holiday tradition was baking sugar cookies. Survivors include her daughter, Susan (Todd) Schmidt and a granddaughter, Ashley Symbol, all of Grinnell; and many other relatives. She was recently preceded in death by her husband, Max; her parents; and four siblings, Bert and Terry Matteson, Roma Carroll, and Carol Henning.
