Lester E. (Sonny) Schneekloth, 87, of Malcom passed away on July 14, 2017, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 19th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Jon Gaul, New Hope United Methodist Church in Des Moines, officiating. Pianist will be Lucy Axmear (sister) and Linda Miller (daughter). Pallbearers will be Mike, Tim and Jeff Schneekloth, Jerry and John Axmear and Perry Fenner. Honorary bearers will be Dennis "Bud" Maschmann, Dale McCammant, Dennis Plantz, John Myers, Howard Samek, Richard Rohrer and Harry Smith. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Malcom Volunteer Fire Department or the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
The one of five children, Sonny was born April 29, 1930, in Malcom to Lester and Josie (Eisele) Schneekloth. Sonny was a life-long resident of Malcom graduating from Malcom High School in 1948. He attended the University of Iowa.
On August 4, 1957, Sonny was united in marriage with Jo Ann Bergman from State Center, Iowa. The couple were three weeks short of celebrating their 60th anniversary.
Sonny operated the family business, Schneekloth Oil Company for over 50 years. There wasn't a farmer within 50 miles of Malcom that Sonny didn't know! He was a 60 plus member and secretary of the Masonic Lily Lodge. He was a member of the Malcom Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school. He served on the Malcom Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, served on both the city council and the BGM school board. Sonny never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with people. He cherished his time with his children and grandchildren. He loved the game of baseball and his favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals. As an avid Hawkeye fan, Sonny was a huge supporter of the University of Iowa and hospitals. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to many Iowa football games, including three Rose Bowls.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; two beloved daughters, Linda (the late Jack) Miller of St. Maarten and Brenda (Tim) McCulley of Urbandale; two grandchildren, Lindsay (Seth) McClellan of Waukee and Tara McCulley of Urbandale; one sister, Lucy (George) Axmear of Malcom; a sister-in-law, Jackie Schneekloth of Cedar Rapids; five nephews and one niece, Mike, Tim and Jeff Schneekloth, all of the Cedar Rapids area and Jerry and John Axmear and Karen Fenner, all of the Malcom area. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin infant sisters; one brother, James Schneekloth; a son-in-law, Jack Miller; a grandson, Matthew McCulley and a nephew, John in infancy.
