Lenna E. Halstead, 94, of Grinnell, died on Monday, September 3, 2012, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Rev. Rose Blanks, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, and Rev. Christine Tinker, Mayflower Community Chaplain, officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and the family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening. Lenna was born on December 24, 1917, in New Sharon, Iowa to Harry Lake and Mary Frances (Huntsman) Turpin. She was raised in New Sharon and graduated from New Sharon High School with the class of 1936. After high school, she attended beauty school in Des Moines and returned to Grinnell and worked as a beautician. She met Leonard Halstead in Grinnell and they were married in the Methodist Parsonage on March 7, 1942. They lived in Junction City, Kansas and Rantoul, Illinois for a time while Leonard was in the United States Army. They returned to Grinnell where their three daughters were born; Rebecca (Becky), Claudia and Cindie. Much of her time was spent involved in the girls' activities, especially Camp Fire Girls. Lenna loved to travel and vacation, including fishing trips to Northern Minnesota with Len (but Lenna would never bait her own hooks!). The family took many trips to the west coast and Canada. She and Len spent several winters in Florida in their later years. Lenna enjoyed flower gardening, sewing (especially doll clothes for the girls' Barbie dolls), baking her specialty cream puffs, and spending time with family and friends. Later in life she was a loyal Hawkeye fan and watched every football and basketball game on TV with her "transistor" radio at her ear for the play-by-play. She worked as a sales person for Poynter's, and then Hamman's Apparel, where she was able to share her love for style and fashion. Lenna celebrated every day to its fullest. As a resident of the Mayflower Health Center, she took part in every activity (often winning in Bingo!) and enjoyed her many new friendships. Lenna will be remembered as an elegant lady, always a loving and generous wife, mother and grandmother. Lenna is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Frei of Moscow, Idaho; Claudia (Alfred) Wicks of Blacksburg, Virginia; and Cindie (Kerry) Halverson of North Prairie, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, Jason, Holly, Cassie, Matthew, Ryan, Christopher, Katie, Kallie and Tyler; and five great grandchildren, Peyton, Ellie, Gregory, Graham and Blake. Lenna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard Halstead in 1989; four sisters, Ramona Turpin, Marjorie Kline, Claudine McGinn and Marian Baltimore; and two brothers, Warren and Emory Turpin.
