Lawrence Sleeuwenhoek, 85, of Grinnell died April 23, 2007, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to Make-A-Wish Foundation. The son of Barend 'Barney' and Mabel Clausen Sleeuwenhoek, Larry was born November 24, 1921, in Jasper County, near Kilduff, Iowa. He was raised in the area and attended Elk Creek country school in Buena Vista Township. After his education he worked on the family farm and did livestock hauling. Larry was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served with an anti-aircraft division at Normandy Beach, the Battle of the Bulge, and other battles in central Europe until the war ended. He also spent six weeks in a military hospital recovering from frozen legs and feet and was a recipient of the Silver Battle Star and Good Conduct Medal. On January 26, 1946, he was married to Doris Marie Paulson, in Newburg. The couple rented farms for several years until they purchased their own farm near Malcom in 1959. They operated a grain and livestock farm as well as renting extra acres. For many years he hauled grain and livestock, did custom combining and sold Pioneer seed corn. He also worked at the Grinnell Sale Barn and drove a snowplow for Poweshiek County. The couple retired from farming in 1986 and moved to Grinnell in 1995. He was a member of the Malcom Co-op and a former member of the Grinnell Odd Fellows Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Doris of Grinnell; two daughters, Bette Jo (Ray) Wood of Swisher, Iowa and Lin Sleeuwenhoek Sierra of Seattle, Washington; one grandson, Bryan (Susan) Wood of Riverside, Iowa; one great-grandchild, Patrick Lawrence Wood of Riverside; one sister, Grace Sleeuwenhoek of Grinnell; and one brother, Wendell (Golda) Sleeuwenhoek of Grinnell.
