Larry was born August 17, 1938 to Albert and Lela (Dobbs) Criswell in Grinnell. He was raised in Grinnell and attended Grinnell School District graduating with the class of 1957. After graduating from high school Larry worked for a few years at Maytag in Newton. After that he worked for Claude Ahrens installing bleacher seats in stadiums all around the United States. Owning and operating bulldozers and construction equipment was always something that he enjoyed and did for the remainder of his life. He also owned and operated a propane business for a few years and later enjoyed helping his son in the propane business starting in 2008. He always enjoyed spending his days working with his son.
Larry married Pat McAtee on March 18, 1978 at the former Oak Grove Friends church south of Grinnell.
Larry enjoyed family gatherings, and was well-known for his story-telling. Having his grandchildren stay overnight always brought him the most joy. He liked to work outside, including fixing up properties with his heavy equipment, and drilling for oil in Kentucky when he visited.
Larry is survived by his wife Pat Criswell; daughter, Cindy Strobel; sons, Charlie (Katie) Criswell, and Nathan Criswell; grandchildren, Tyler Graham, Ashley and Landon Criswell, Olivia and Sam Strobel, Jake and Jared Wickwire, Caleb, Ryan, and Eli Criswell.
