Larry R. Cooper, 78, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell with Rev. David Crow, pastor of the church, officiating. Marvin Foss will be the eulogist. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Hickory Grove Cemetery near Newburg. Memorials may be directed to the Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Larry was born on June 24, 1937, in Grinnell, Iowa to Everett and Betty Smith Cooper. He was raised on the family farm near Rock Creek Lake and graduated from Newburg High School with the Class of 1955. Following his education he worked for the Grinnell Glove Company. On July 19, 1959, he was married to Sandra Clifton in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked in the meat department of Jerry's By Lo Foods and Food-4-Less in Grinnell and Save-A-Lot Foods in Tama. Prior to his retirement in 2006, he worked in the Building and Grounds Department of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Larry was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He took pride in his yard and enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables in his garden. Survivors include his wife, Sandy Cooper of Grinnell; his children, Kim (Tom) Cooper of Grinnell, David (Machell) Cooper of Knoxville, IA and Randy (Jana) Cooper of Portland, Oregon; eight grandchildren, Brent Berger, Amanda Banks, Kylie, Jacee, Reagan, Madison, Spencer and Deserae Cooper; five great grandchildren, Brayden, Brelee and Addilyn Berger, Nia and Jocelyn Banks and Braxton Cooper; and one sister, Karen Beck of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Cooper; and his parents.
